Behind the headlines

Welcome to my new blog about some of the things that happen in the Journal's newsroom.
Take, for example, the Sedgefield by-election.
You might imagine that covering an election for a safe Labour seat - where no-one else really stood a chance of winning - would be pretty plain sailing.
But you would be wrong, my friends...

And anyway ...

I tell the son I need the computer. And anyway, he's been on MSN long enough. There's a limit to the time he can sit there, square eyed, talking nonsense to people. Talking the same nonsense to the same people he spoke nonsense to last night and the night before. And the night before that.

Potty. Or what?

I tell the son there's no way we are going out in the rain at the dead of night to stand in a queue in Asda. Or worse, to stand in a queue outside Asda. He says there's no way he can wait until tomorrow morning. He has to have the book. And he has to have it now.

Football sells papers, don't you know

As a season ticket holder who has endured some grim times at St James's Park in recent years, the announcement of Freddy Shepherd being replaced as chairman made me a very happy little ginger boy.
As a journalist, it's made me even happier.
Nothing sells papers in Newcastle like football, and this summer has been a veritable soap opera from the moment that Mike Ashley bought out the Hall family's shares in the club.

These days hardly a day goes by with out there being an environmental story in the news. TV programmes are dedicated to showing us all how to ‘Go Green’. Shops and businesses are falling over themselves to shout about just how ethical they are and Popstars all over the world are jumping on the solar-powered bandwagon calling upon everyone to save planet earth, whilst doing the exact opposite themselves.
Very few people doubt the need to live a more sustainable lifestyle but its not always such an easy or straightforward thing to do.

How to make anything a good news story (or die trying)
Posted by Graeme on July 27, 2007 2:31 PM
You would think that when someone in Newcastle City Council found out that 54,000 people's credit card details had inadvertently been leaked out, they'd keep their heads down.
But you would be wrong, my friends.
The council press office broke the story of its almighty cock-up by releasing a statement that began: "Newcastle City Council is today volunteering publicly that it has detected and tackled an inappropriate release of up to 54,000 credit and debit card details".
Y'know, like it was doing us all a favour.

Seasonal food for August
Posted by Anna Heywood on July 30, 2007 6:31 AM
As summer heads towards its peak (did it ever get going?), fruit and vegetables should be in abundance.
As well as a list of seasonal fruit and vegetables for the month of August, I will post a couple of excellent links to sites which deal with seasonal and veg box recipes.
Happy Eating
