I always find this time of year really awkward when it comes to deciding what to wear and what to buy. Although in the North East the weather is generally cold, wet and windy, it gets to a point when the last thing you want to do is pull on another woolly jumper or thick pair of tights. But at the same time, you’d look a bit ridiculous walking the streets wearing a summer dress and flip flops!
I hit the shops this weekend in the hope of finding some new clothes to help my transition from winter woolies to spring brights, but came away pretty much empty handed (bar a couple of pairs of shoes, more of which later.)
It may have been the fact that it was cold, grey and blustery outside (thus dampening my spring-like enthusiasm) but for once I was actually uninspired and didn’t even find anything to try on, let alone buy. Or it could simply have been the fact that I was looking for things and had money to spend, therefore the shopping law decrees that I won’t find a thing. Whatever it was, I wasn’t happy!
I went to all my usual places, tried and tested favourites usually guaranteed to at least produce one item to add to my wardrobe but, alas, nothing. Just as I was about to give up hope and head home, I popped into Baratts in Eldon Square and came across some cute grey shoes that faded from silvery-grey at the front, to almost black at the back in an ombre-effect that has been seen all over the catwalks this season. A quick swipe of the card later and they were mine.
As I was cutting through Marks and Spencer on my way to meet my parents for a lift home, I found another gorgeous pair of shoes, this time in a nude patent leather with a bow on the front (another key trend this season.) I made the fatal error of trying them on and immediately fell in love with them. After a few mintues of deliberation (did I really need two pairs of shoes?) I decided to treat myself and buy them too – why not?!
So, although I didn’t quite manage a mammoth shopping spree this time, I’m holiding out hope that I might stumble across the perfect new additions to my spring wardrobe over a few lunchtime trips to the shops.
